Wallace Cross-Country Series & Wallace Shield Challenge 2026
18 April, 02 May & 09 May - Moturoa/Rabbit Island
The Wallace cross-country events are designed to be fun, welcoming and family-friendly, giving children and young people a chance to enjoy cross-country running in a supportive environment. They are ideal preparation for the School League and School Cross Country Races in June.
Participants can run, or walk, or run & walk their chosen distance. Parents are welcome to accompany younger children on the 1-lap option. This year, anyone wanting to compete for the Wallace Shield will need to choose the 3-lap distance as points will not be assigned for the 1 and 2 lap options.
The usual Wallace Shield challenges will be there, but in this order:
18 April: Guess your Time. Run without watches or timing devices.
2 May: Handicap Start. Your start wave is set from your previous time.
9 May: Beat Your Previous Time. Run or Walk Your Fastest.
The three events will be held on Moturoa / Rabbit Island, starting at 2:30pm. The first two races will start at the Old Domain (one on the beach, one on the grass); the 3rd race will start in the Totara Picnic area.
Wallace Shield Challenge Eligibility
This year, only those undertaking the 3-lap option and sticking to their chosen discipline of either Running or Walking in all three events, will be in the running for the coveted Wallace Shield. As usual, only financial members of Waimea Harriers can win the Wallace Shield, but anyone is welcome to participate. Its free for kids & students to join Waimea Harriers.
